Modernism – In Print Dutch Graphic Design 1917-2017, 2017

Information

From the back cover:
‘Modernism: In Print. Dutch Graphic Design 1917-2017, written by Frederike Huygen, deals with the concept of modernism in Dutch graphic design on the basis of three reflections on the periods 1920-1940/45, 1945-1990 and the 1990s to the present. Modernism is seen as a complex phenomenon that relates to many aspects of the profession: it is a style and a design method, but it also means innovation, resistance and experiment, and stands for idealism and a mentality. The book is very richly illustrated with numerous examples from the collections and archives of the Special Collections of the University of Amsterdam.’

I first came across Kens work in the Unit Edition’s superb monograph, Structure and Substance, published in 2012. Although I had owned a few of the British industrial design magazines, Design, for a few years before, in which Ken had designed numerous covers for.
In the ambitious new monograph Rational Simplicity: Rudolph de Harak, Graphic Designer, Volume shines a light on the complete arc of the exceptionally rich and varied career of Rudolph de Harak, showcasing his vibrant, graphic, formally brilliant work, which blazed a colourful trail through the middle decades of the twentieth century.
